Disabled man given $5,000 after car stolen

A local businessman has come forward to write a $5,000 check to a disabled Miami, Fla., man whose car was stolen Monday night.

"This $5,000 saved my life because I have no money to afford to buy a car,” Fontaine said, holding the check Thursday.

When Fontaine’s gray 1996 Nissan Sentra was taken from right outside his home, his wheelchair mount and footrest went with it.

The car is still gone, but a Coral Springs businessman – who wishes to remain anonymous – made a large donation after seeing NBC Miami’s story Tuesday night.

On Thursday Fontaine called the man to thank him.

“Thank you very much, sir,” said Fontaine, who has used a wheelchair for the last 20 years after he lost his legs to an infection.

“You’re welcome, my friend,” the businessman replied. “You’re welcome.”

“That’s a great help,” Fontaine said. “This way I can get a new car.”

“My heart goes with you. No one should have to deal with something like that,” the man said.

The initial story was also seen by someone Fontaine had not heard from since they served together in the Army in the 1960s – a long-lost friend from Miami Lakes.

Penis tattoo gives guy permanent erection

You’d think somebody repeatedly sticking a needle in your penis would be a little off-putting, but the 21-year-old Iranian apparently thought it would be a grand idea to have Persian script reading borow be salaamat (good luck on your journeys), and the first initial of his girlfriend’s last name (“M”) tattooed onto his little gentleman.

He was left with a permanent semi-erection as a reminder of just how good the idea was.

His case raises a number of questions, not least whether the wish for good luck is directed to the penis or to the man, and if it’s to the penis, where, exactly, is it going? But, medically speaking, how could getting penis ink give make the organ go haywire?

The answer rests in the traditional technique the man subjected himself to. “Handheld needles are used and there is no control of the depth of the needle,” Iranian urologists reported in the most recent Journal of Sexual Medicine. “Henna, ash, and other natural pigments are used by traditional tattooists. They first use their needles to penetrate the skin. Then they apply the coloring material on the perforated skin surface.”

Naturally, this proved painful. After several days, the pain subsided. Soon after it did, though, the man noticed that his nighttime woodies were lasting a long time. A week later, he had a 24/7 priapic erection.

As erectile dysfunction pill commercials constantly remind us, non-sex-related erections lasting longer than four hours are dangerous for penises. The lack of fresh blood flow can starve the spongy tissues of oxygen, destroying them and resulting in impotence.

There are two types of priapism, ischemic and non-ischemic, according to UCLA urologist Dr. Jeffrey Bassett. In a normal erection, blood flows into the penis via arteries, and as pressure builds, the veins leading out are temporarily blocked. In ischemic priapism, the veins don’t open up again.

In non-ischemic priapism, the veins allow blood out of the penile tissue, but too much blood is flowing in via the arteries and the veins can’t keep up. So blood pressure builds. This isn’t as dangerous since fresh blood is coming in all the time, but it can be pretty inconvenient. If it doesn’t resolve, either on its own or with treatment, it can cause damage in some cases.

Bassett once treated a 24-year-old skateboarder who’d traumatized his pelvic area in a skate accident. It tuned out that the injury caused a blood vessel fistula that interfered with normal flow into and out of the penis.
According to the Iranian doctors, this is what happened to the young man. The tattooist punctured too-deep holes that damaged vessels in the penis, resulting in fistulas, and then a pseudoaneurysm, a pooling of blood outside a vessel wall. They recommended he see a specialist to have the blood removed, but he rejected that idea and saw another doctor to have a shunt procedure performed. It didn’t work.

Since the fellow is still able to have sex, and achieve a more-or-less normal erection, he’s rejected any more treatments, even the one his urologists recommended in the first place.

In one of those statements you’d think nobody would actually have to make, the Iranian doctors wrote “based on our unique case, we discourage penile tattooing.”

Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop, 30, Arrested By Madison, Wisc. Police

We've seen plenty of weird crime mugshots and heard plenty of bizarre stories. But when it comes to criminal names, this one is ... a mouthful.

Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop, 30, was arrested Thursday afternoon on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and a violation of probation in Madison, Wisc.

Zopittybop-Bop-Bop was born Jeffrey Drew Wilschke, according to court records unearthed by the Capital Times. He legally changed his name to Beezow Doo-Doo Zoopittybop-Bop-Bop in October.

According to Zopittybop-Bop-Bop's apparent Facebook account, when he's not in trouble with the law he enjoys activities including "eating," "standing," walking," "thinking," and "diamond." He's also single... so there's that, ladies.

Zopittybop-Bop-Bop was apprehended by authorities after neighbors complained of "excessive drinking and drug use" around a local park, the Madison police report says.

Police say that when they took Zopittybop-Bop-Bop into custody, they found him in possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a knife.

On his way to the prison, Zopittybop-Bop-Bop allegedly told cops that he would eventually "get even with them."

If he plans to do so by challenging the precinct to the most amazing scat-off we've ever seen, we call dibs on front-seat tickets.

Man Arrested For Drunken Driving Outside Of Jail

BELLEVILLE, Ill.—
Authorities say a drunken driving suspect made his arrest about as easy as can be New Year's Day, passing out in the driver's seat of his SUV in the county jail parking lot with the motor running and a bottle of beer nearby.

St. Clair County deputies arrested 32-year-old Casey Crane, of Caseyville, early New Year's Day.

Authorities say Crane had brought someone to the jail so they could have a visit, and nodded off behind the wheel of his running Chevrolet Blazer with a 12-ounce bottle of Coors Light in plain view, the Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/yuoulw ) reported Wednesday.

Acknowledging having had a couple of drinks and smelling of alcohol, a slurring Crane was taken about 20 feet to the jail, where he refused to submit to field sobriety tests of a breath test, sheriff's investigators said. So authorities got a search warrant, and a jail nurse drew a blood sample from Crane that was sent off to Illinois State Police for testing.

Crane was charged with driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol, having an uninsured vehicle and improper use of registration.

Crane is free on bond. He did not immediately respond to a phone message left at his home Wednesday seeking comment.

Police: Woman wore fake mustache to steal from neighbors

SALT LAKE CITY -- Police say a Salt Lake City woman wore a fake mustache to disguise herself as a man while stealing from her neighbors.

Salt Lake City police say the 31-year-old was charged with two counts of burglary and one count of theft Thursday.

The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/wQ0s0u ) reports the woman's neighbors noticed thousands of dollars in cash went missing from their home on several occasions.

Court documents state the couple then set a trap with security cameras and planted cash as bait. The cameras showed a woman wearing a very large men's suit, a beanie hat and a fake mustache.

Authorities say the victims recognized the woman as their neighbor, to whom they had given a key to their house.

Police say they later found the disguise in the woman's home. The woman's name wasn't reported.

Couple Finds $4,500 Wedding Ring In Dog's Stomach

Dogs always get blamed for eating homework, but how about a $4,500 wedding ring?

It happened to an Albuquerque family and when nature would not pass the ring back, they had to find another way.

Rachelle Atkinson has a habit of leaving her wedding ring on her night stand and in the morning, she puts it back on - that was until a few weeks ago.

"I went to go put it on and it was nowhere to be found," she said.

Rachelle and her husband Scott searched everywhere but eventually started to suspect a thief, their 10-month old basset hound, Coraline.

"She was the only one in our room so we immediately looked at her and she looked guilty," Atkinson said.
For the next 10 days, Scott had to go through a lot of Coraline's droppings searching for the treasure.

"I had to go through all the 'poos' everyday and squish them up and make sure there were no hard lumps in there so yeah, that wasn't much fun," said Scott Atkinson.

It turns out he did it all for nothing. X-rays showed the ring wasn't coming out on its own.

"So we took her to the vet and there it was lying in the bottom of her stomach and it was just too heavy to pass so we had to take her in for surgery," Atkinson said.

The vet had to go fishing.

She first had to knock Coraline out then feed an instrument down her throat into her stomach and after a few hours they got the ring back.

Now Coraline is back to her old self - of course getting into trouble once again.

Rachelle now hides her $4,500 ring out of sight while Coraline is off munching away at anything she can find.
"She's a good dog and she's just a wonderful addition to our family but we'll never forget this - the ring and her have gotten more expensive," Atkinson said.

The vet said Basset Hounds have tendency of eating rocks, which means Coraline has really expensive taste.

Casey Anthony speaks out for the first time in video diary

While Casey Anthony sightings have been scarce in the six months since she was cleared of killing her toddler daughter Caylee, the 25-year-old has resurfaced in a video that she apparently recorded herself in October.

Video: Casey Anthony speaks out in online video (on this page)

“It’s just a little surreal how much things have changed since July and how many things haven’t changed,” Anthony says in the 4 ½ minute video, which aired on TODAY Thursday. NBC News has confirmed that it is Anthony on camera.

Anthony’s appearance is markedly different from her last public showing in the Florida courtroom as her “not guilty” verdict was read — she sports short, blonde locks and wears glasses. She revealed that she'll remain in her hiding spot "at least until the end of February." And as she talks about her new life, Anthony indicates this video diary may not be her last.

“I’m extremely excited,” she says. “I’m excited that I’ll be able to Skype and obviously keep a video log, take some pictures and that I have something that I can finally call mine,” she says on camera. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to call something mine.”

Story: Bestselling author goes ‘Inside the Mind of Casey Anthony’ Anthony doesn’t address the sensational six-week murder trial that ended with her acquittal last July, but does express optimism in her new life as she serves out a year’s probation in Florida on an unrelated charge.

“The good thing is things are starting to look up and things are starting to change in a good way. I just hope they stay — that things stay good, that they only get better. They’ll only get better.”

Story: 'Ignore Casey Anthony,' urges her former prosecutor Anthony makes no mention of her daughter Caylee, first reported missing in July 2008 and found dead five months later. Nor does she discuss the more than 1,000 days she spent in jail before being acquitted. But she does speak of the loneliness of living in hiding — and says the video camera has become her friend.

“Now I in some ways have someone to talk to even when I am by myself so I am not bothering the poor dog who I have adopted and I love,” she says.

And while Anthony likely got used to having cameras trained on her during her long, televised trial, she expressed awkwardness at taping herself.

“I don’t know whether to look directly at myself or up,” she says with a laugh. “It’s a little scary because I hate being on camera.”

Cops: Colorado woman punches, rubs her buttocks against $30 million painting

A 36-year-old woman was charged Wednesday after punching, scratching and sliding her buttocks against a painting worth more than $30 million, authorities in Colorado said.

Carmen Tisch is accused of pulling her pants down to rub up against the work, an oil-on-canvas called "1957-J no.2", by the late abstract expressionist artist Clyfford Still.

Tisch allegedly caused $10,000 worth of damage to the painting.

Tisch was charged with felony criminal mischief on Wednesday and has been held on a $20,000 bond since the incident in late December, said Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver District Attorney's Office.

Citing the police report, the Denver Post reported that the suspect was apparently drunk at the time.
Kimbrough said Tisch urinated after she rubbed up against the canvas at the recently opened Clyfford Still museum in Denver.

"It doesn't appear she urinated on the painting or that the urine damaged it, so she's not being charged with that," Kimbrough said according to the Denver Post.

"You have to wonder where her friends were," she said.

A Denver art gallery owner, Ivar Zeile, told the Post that the painting could probably be restored as long as the canvas wasn't pierced.

"It does damage the piece, though, even people just knowing what happened," he added.

Influential Born in North Dakota in 1904, Still was considered one of the most influential of the American post-World War Two abstract expressionist artists, although he was not as well known as others such as Jackson Pollock.

Still died in 1980, and the city of Denver worked for years with his widow, Patricia, to secure the single-artist museum. She died in 2005, and her husband's collection was bequeathed to the city.

Four of Still's works were auctioned by Sotheby's last year for $114 million to endow the Denver museum, which opened with much fanfare in November.

Because Still closely guarded his works, most of the pieces at his namesake museum had not previously been displayed.

Tisch will be formally advised of the charges on Friday, Kimbrough said.

Okla. Woman Shoots, Kills Intruder: 911 Operators Say It's Okay to Shoot

A young Oklahoma mother shot and killed an intruder to protect her 3-month-old baby on New Year's Eve, less than a week after the baby's father died of cancer.

Sarah McKinley says that a week earlier a man named Justin Martin dropped by on the day of her husband's funeral, claiming that he was a neighbor who wanted to say hello. The 18-year-old Oklahoma City area woman did not let him into her home that day.

On New Year's Eve Martin returned with another man, Dustin Stewart, and this time was armed with a 12-inch hunting knife. The two soon began trying to break into McKinley's home.

As one of the men was going from door to door outside her home trying to gain entry, McKinley called 911 and grabbed her 12-gauge shotgun.

McKinley told ABC News Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO that she quickly got her 12 gauge, went into her bedroom and got a pistol, put the bottle in the baby's mouth and called 911.

I've got two guns in my hand -- is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?" the young mother asked the 911 dispatcher. "I'm here by myself with my infant baby, can I please get a dispatcher out here immediately?"
The 911 dispatcher confirmed with McKinley that the doors to her home were locked as she asked again if it was okay to shoot the intruder if he were to come through her door.

"I can't tell you that you can do that but you do what you have to do to protect your baby," the dispatcher told her. McKinley was on the phone with 911 for a total of 21 minutes.

When Martin kicked in the door and came after her with the knife, the teen mom shot and killed the 24-year-old. Police are calling the shooting justified.

"You're allowed to shoot an unauthorized person that is in your home. The law provides you the remedy, and sanctions the use of deadly force," Det. Dan Huff of the Blanchard police said.
Stewart soon turned himself in to police.

McKinley said that she was at home alone with her newborn that night because her husband just died of cancer on Christmas Day.

"I wouldn't have done it, but it was my son," McKinley told ABC News Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO. "It's not an easy decision to make, but it was either going to be him or my son. And it wasn't going to be my son. There's nothing more dangerous than a woman with a child."

Man Attends Kids Movie Totally Naked

NORTH RIVERSIDE  — A completely naked Chicago man allegedly exposed himself in front of families attending a showing of “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” in North Riverside.

About 30 minutes into a matinée show on Dec. 29, a naked Edward L. Brown, 34, stood up in the front row and turned around. Facing the packed audience, Brown stretched out his hands and exposed his genitals for everyone to see, then sat back down, according to a report in the Riverside Brookfield Landmark.

There were 86 people in the theater at the time of the incident. North Riverside police were called to the theater and arrested Brown.

Brown told officers that he had been let inside the movie theater by a woman who told him to take off his clothes and wait for her, so they could have sex, smoke crack and do heroin, according to a police report cited by the Landmark.

Brown remains in custody, charged with three felony counts of sexual exploitation of children, a misdemeanor count of sexual exploitation of a minor and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.

Children ages 4, 6 and 14 were specifically mentioned in the charges.

Bond for Brown was set at $100,000 on Dec. 30 at the Maybrook Courthouse in Maywood, the Landmark reported. He is set to return on Monday of next week for a preliminary hearing.

The theater manager offered refunds or vouchers to another show for those who were in the theater, the Landmark reported.

Suburban Boca man accused of trying to bribe deputy with Dolphins tickets

A man charged with offering a law enforcement officer two tickets to today's Miami Dolphins pro football season finale to avoid arrest might be mostly guilty of overestimating their value, a judge said at the man's bond hearing this morning.

Eric Scott Topalian, 23, of suburban Boca Raton, is charged with two counts each of possessing controlled drugs without a prescription, bribery of a public servant, threatening a public servant and resisting arrest without violence.

Documents detailing the alleged incident weren't available today because of the holiday.
Palm Beach County Jail records show Topalian was booked Saturday afternoon by Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies.

Although the Dolphins face their hated rivals, the New York Jets, they've struggled through yet another sub-.500 season. They started 0-7, fired head coach Tony Sparano in mid-December with three games left, and go into this afternoon's Jets face-off with a 5-10 record.

"Have you been watching the Dolphins? No one's going to go to that game," Palm Beach County Judge Timothy P. McCarthy told Topalian.

Topalian began to say something but the judge admonished him that it probably would be better if he didn't discuss the potential value of an alleged bribe while he still was considered innocent until proven guilty.

"Miami-Jets tickets aren't worth a damn," McCarthy said, and reduced Topalian's bond accordingly, ordering him held in lieu of $6,000 bail.

As it turned out, it might have been the judge who made the wrong call about the game. The Dolphins won a thriller, 19-17.

Man Steals Fire Engine, Escapes From Donovan State Prison

OTAY MESA — A 51-year-old inmate who used a yellow prison firetruck to escape Sunday from Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa remains at large, officials said Monday.

Thomas Francis Kelley is a car thief who was in jail for a parole violation, Donovan spokesman Lt. Patrick Logan said.

“It appears he just jumped in the vehicle and left,” said Logan, who added that inmates assigned to firefighting duties are rigorously screened and given a small amount of freedom, as they are housed outside the secure perimeter of the prison.

Logan said law enforcement officials are fairly confident Kelley is in the Spring Valley area and are focusing the search there.

Two versions of the escape have emerged.

On Sunday, sheriff’s officials said they received a call shortly before 8:30 p.m. that two men were having trouble parking a yellow firetruck in a 7-Eleven parking lot in Spring Valley at Jamacha Road and Elkelton Boulevard.

When deputies arrived, the truck was there but the men were gone, sheriff’s Lt. Kelly Stuart said.
A news release from Donovan prison on Monday morning said a deputies saw a fire engine driving erratically in Spring Valley, about 10 miles from the prison. When the deputies pulled the engine over, the driver jumped out and ran away.

Deputies put out an immediate all-points bulletin, the news release said. Kelley also was discovered missing during a count at the prison at 9:30 p.m.

Kelley is described as white, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 7 inches tall, 170 pounds with light brown hair and blue eyes. He is clean shaven and wears prescription glasses. He was last seen wearing light blue faded jeans, a blue jean jacket and construction boots.

He was sent to state prison for vehicle theft in August 2008. In November 2010, a parole violation landed him at Donovan, where he was housed at a minimum security facility and assigned as an inmate firefighter.
He was scheduled for release in December 2013.

According to public records, at least four criminal cases have been filed against him in San Diego County between 1991 and 2010.

Donovan, near the Tijuana border, houses 3,900 minimum, medium and high-security inmates, to whom it offers academic and vocational education programs, work training in prison industries and inmate self-help group activities, according to the release.

For minimum security inmates, such as Kelley, there are opportunities for jobs in fire suppression and off-reservation work crews. They provide fire suppression for Donovan and can respond when other fire agencies put out calls for mutual aid.

Anyone with information about Kelley’s whereabouts is asked to call Donovan Correctional Facility at (619) 661-6500.

Maine man guilty of arson at topless coffee shop

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A man blamed for a fire that destroyed a coffee shop where topless waitresses worked has been found guilty of arson.

A jury convicted Raymond Bellavance Jr. on Friday after deliberating for four hours.

Prosecutors said "anger and jealousy" caused Bellavance to set fire to the coffee shop, where his ex-girlfriend worked as a waitress. Deputy District Attorney Alan Kelley told jurors Bellavance was "a volatile man" who was quick to anger because his former girlfriend was having a relationship with the shop's owner, the Bangor Daily News reported.

The Grand View Coffee Shop in Vassalboro, a town of about 4,000 residents just north of the state capital, Augusta, burned down June 3, 2009.

The defense insisted Bellavance didn't do it.

Bellavance testified he wasn't jealous. He said other people, including a man who testified he helped set the fire, were lying.

A witness who recently finished a drug rehabilitation program testified last week that he was present when Bellavance poured and ignited gasoline behind the coffee shop in the early morning hours. Thomas Mulkern said Bellavance then became upset, telling him they could get life in prison because there were people inside the adjoining apartments.

Coffee shop owner Donald Crabtree and six other people, including two infants, were sleeping in a room connected to the shop. All escaped without injury.

Couple finds missing engagement ring, 36 years after it fell into toilet

A Montana woman has gotten back her long-lost engagement ring, 36 years after it first went missing.

Terry and Donna Claver had been out only three times when they decided to get married back in 1973. The pair picked out a sapphire engagement ring with a gold band, the best they could afford at the time.

About a year and a half later, a heavily pregnant Donna put the ring on the back of the toilet while putting lotion on and watched it slip into the toilet bowl.

“I went to grab it, but I missed and it fell in,” Donna told the Billings Gazette. “It went right down into the little hole at the bottom of the toilet. I could put my finger in that hole and feel it with the tip of my finger, but it was wedged in tight.”

Claver and her husband did their best to get the ring free, draining the toilet, and then shaking, poking and prodding it, but nothing worked. They gave up, and several years later moved out of the small one bedroom house.

They stayed in Stanford and watched as the house went through several other owners, eventually ending up as a hunting cabin for a group from Florida.

“It always irritated me that we lost it,” Terry told the paper. “I always wanted to get it back. About five years ago the hunters asked me to go in the house and fix a bathroom faucet. I saw the toilet over there and I thought, ‘I ought to just take that toilet up to see if that ring is still down there.’ But I didn’t have time and it was somebody else’s house, so I didn’t.”

But a lucky break came just last month when Terry, fixing the roof of a building across the street from his first house, saw the hunters carrying out the old, now broken toilet, so they could replace it with a new one. Terry offered to throw the toilet away for them and they happily accepted.

“I put it in the back of my pickup and drove it into the shop,” he told the paper. “I got a sledgehammer, and I whacked it. The base of the toilet fell down on the truck’s end gate, and right in the center where the little hole would have been was the ring.”

Terry excitedly called for his wife to join him in the shop. And that’s when she got a sight of the ring she thought she would never see again.

Holding it out on his pinky, Terry asked his wife of nearly four decades:

“Honey — will you marry me?”

The excited couple, who are now grandparents, laughed and cried, celebrating so many years after this symbol of their young love was lost.

“If we would have got the ring back six weeks after we lost it, we probably wouldn’t have remembered it,” Terry told the newspaper. “Every marriage goes through its seasons. Sometimes you think everything the other person does is cute, and other times you can’t stand to be around them. Finding the ring brought back the same original feelings we had when we were kids. It was a gift from God that made those feelings strong again.”

Lexington man charged with making a fake $1 million bill and trying to spend it

Talk about leaving the store with a big chunk of change.

A Lexington man is accused trying to use a fake $1 million bill to pay for his purchases at a Walmart.

Michael Anthony Fuller, 53, of 3 Parker St., walked into the Walmart on Lowes Boulevard in Lexington on Nov. 17. He shopped for a while, picking up a vacuum cleaner, a microwave oven and other merchandise, totaling $476, an arrest warrant says.

When he got to the register, Fuller gave the cashier the phony bill, saying that it was real.
Store staff called police.

Fuller was later charged with attempting to obtain property by false pretense and uttering a forged instrument, both felonies, court records show.

A warrant says of the fake million-dollar bill: "There is no such thing."

The largest bill in circulation is a $100 bill. In 1969, federal officials discontinued the use of $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 bills because of lack of public use.

The largest note ever printed was the $100,000 bill, which featured President Woodrow Wilson. The bills, which were not available to the public, were printed from Dec. 18, 1934, through Jan. 9, 1935, and were used for transactions between Federal Reserve banks.

Fuller was being held Friday night in the Davidson County Jail with bond set at $17,500. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Lexington police Sgt. Shannon Sharpe said the case is unusual.

"It is kind of strange," Sharpe said.
