Injured man commandeers ambulance - to drive himself to hospital

TAMPA — A 39-year-old man who said he was beaten by four people took an unconventional route to seek medical attention Thursday night.

He stole an ambulance while it was out on another call and tried to drive himself to the hospital, police said.
Hubert Lee Credit faces a charge of auto burglary and grand theft auto after he took the ambulance belonging to TransCare Medical Transportation Services.

Medical personnel with TransCare had responded to a call at 312 W Genesee St. shortly before 10:30 p.m.

While inside the home with a patient, they heard the engine fire up.

They looked outside and saw a man driving away with the emergency lights flashing, police said.

Using a global positioning device inside the ambulance, police tracked the vehicle.

They were able to stop it at N Tampa Street and E 26th Avenue, where Credit was arrested.

"I got beat up by four guys," he said, according to a police report. "I saw the ambulance, and I was going to drive myself to the hospital."

Credit had a puncture wound to his head and was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment.
