Man Arrested For Drunken Driving Outside Of Jail

BELLEVILLE, Ill.—
Authorities say a drunken driving suspect made his arrest about as easy as can be New Year's Day, passing out in the driver's seat of his SUV in the county jail parking lot with the motor running and a bottle of beer nearby.

St. Clair County deputies arrested 32-year-old Casey Crane, of Caseyville, early New Year's Day.

Authorities say Crane had brought someone to the jail so they could have a visit, and nodded off behind the wheel of his running Chevrolet Blazer with a 12-ounce bottle of Coors Light in plain view, the Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/yuoulw ) reported Wednesday.

Acknowledging having had a couple of drinks and smelling of alcohol, a slurring Crane was taken about 20 feet to the jail, where he refused to submit to field sobriety tests of a breath test, sheriff's investigators said. So authorities got a search warrant, and a jail nurse drew a blood sample from Crane that was sent off to Illinois State Police for testing.

Crane was charged with driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol, having an uninsured vehicle and improper use of registration.

Crane is free on bond. He did not immediately respond to a phone message left at his home Wednesday seeking comment.
