Decatur, IL Reported Crimes 2002-2010

Well here it is somewhat the start of a new year in Decatur, IL. (2011). Now a-lot of times I hear, Decatur is one of the wost towns to live in. Jobs moving out, Schools not doing well and crime rates way to high. Now I do understand the jobs moving out, look at a-lot of bigger city's in IL. Its a tough place in IL to work right now,not just Decatur. School system is going to be a different day post. Lets have a-look at the Crime rate for the last few years.

You tell me do we see A sign of Crime dropping?

Let's talk about the first on the list Homicide, yes for the year 2010 4 is way to high of a number to have happen in the town of Decatur, but lets go back a few years. I would have to say homicides rates have dropped in numbers. It would be nice to see 0, but then again are 4 to Chicago's 435 homicides or even Springfield's 12 I would say Decatur is in a smaller group. Yes both towns are bigger and Chicago being it's own state almost.
  • 2003 - Total of 8
  • 2005 - Total of 9
  • 2006 - Total of 10
  • 2008 - Total of 9
  • 2009 - Total of 4
  • 2010 - Total of 4

Feel free to look the numbers over on the rest of the chart. Yes crime is high, but not near what the last 8 years have been.

FBI asks public for help breaking encrypted notes tied to 1999 murder

By Brett Michael Dykes

In what seems like a throwback to the still-unsolved Zodiac killings that terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1970s, the FBI has sent out a public appeal for amateur sleuths to help solve a key cryptographic clue in a 1999 murder case.

On June 30, 1999, police officers in St. Louis, Missouri found the body of 41-year-old Ricky McCormick, who'd been murdered and dumped in a field. The only clues investigators recovered from the scene were two encrypted notes stuffed into the victim's pockets.

"Despite extensive work by our Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit (CRRU), as well as help from the American Cryptogram Association, the meanings of those two coded notes remain a mystery to this day, and Ricky McCormick's murderer has yet to face justice," the FBI said in a press release today. CRRU chief Dan Olson added, "We are really good at what we do, but we could use some help with this one ... Maybe someone with a fresh set of eyes might come up with a brilliant new idea."

The FBI has reached out to the public with code breaking brain teasers in the past--but they were games, not actual cases. This is the chance for want-to-be FBI sleuths to break their brains on code that is part of a current investigation. The notes are after the jump.

Channel your favorite CSI character, folks. Here are the notes:

The bureau isn't offering any reward for assistance in solving the case at this time, but the FBI is asking people who believe they may have some insight into the notes write to the address below:

DECATUR, IL- A routine traffic stop in Decatur ends with two men being arrested and police getting over a pound of cocaine off the street.

According to sworn statements, a Macon County Sheriff's Deputy initiated a traffic stop of Chevy Malibu near the intersection of Route 48 and Rock Springs Road just after 11:30 p.m. Monday night. The two men inside the car told police they were traveling back to Decatur after attending a funeral in Tennessee.

A Decatur K-9 unit was called to the scene to conduct a free air sniff of the outside of the car. The K-9 partner gave a positive indication of the presence of drugs inside the car.

Police searched the vehicle and allegedly found 760 grams of cocaine concealed inside the trunk.

The driver of the car, 29 year-old Shawn Barbee, and the passenger, 31 year-old Byron Theus, were both taken into custody. Neither men gave police a statement.
