Jesus In Walmart Receipt: The Strangest 'Sacred Sightings' Of 201

God definitely moved in strange and unusual ways this past year -- at least judging from when and where the Creator of the universe has been seen.

For instance, a couple in Anderson County, S.C., believe they saw the image of Jesus appear in their Walmart receipt, while a woman in Kansas has varicose veins that reportedly spell out the letters "G-O-D."
People also claimed they saw Christ in pizza, rocking chairs and on the side of an Irish cliff.
Of course, seeing a Christ-like image in odd places -- like a glob of melted wax -- could be a profound experience to some, and a mere coincidence or simple joke to others.

Nevertheless, there may be a scientific explanation for those who find significance in such sacred sightings.
Researchers at Northwestern University led by Joel Voss say the human brain is wired to look for familiarity and meaning in the most abstract squiggles.

Because our brains automatically identify similar objects and then organize them according to type, we can look at a baseball cap and a fedora and know right away that both are hats.

However, all the scientific evidence in the world doesn't take away the profound spiritual feelings felt by people like pilot Sandra Clifford, the woman who saw the image of Jesus on the side of the cliff in Ireland and snapped a photo on her digital camera.

"I definitely felt a divine presence," Clifford told HuffPost Weird News. "To me, it was definitely a face, but I realize some people may interpret it differently."

Of course, other people don't leave sacred sightings to chance, like Brooklyn entrepreneur Rob Corso, who is marketing a panini maker called the Grilled Cheesus, which prints the image of Jesus onto sandwiches. It goes on the market in March, and he hopes to make a lot of (daily) bread from it.

Darrin Porter Allegedly Brought Beer to Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting

The first step to recovery is to admit you have a problem. You don't have to bring physical evidence.

A "very intoxicated" man who was carrying a beer crashed an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio and refused to leave, according to court documents.

Darrin Porter, 45, showed up drunk at the 12 Step House at 12:15 a.m. and wandered the hallways, interrupting a meeting according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Employees escorted Porter out of the facility, but he allegedly returned. When police arrived, the suspect declined to answer officers' questions and demanded to know their names and social security numbers, according to Fox 19.

Police claim they detected a "strong odor" of alcohol on the suspect's breath and took him into custody, according to WLWT.

Babysitter Kept Aliahna Lemmon's Head in His Freezer

The babysitter charged with killing a 9-year-old girl who disappeared from an Indiana trailer park dismembered her body and kept her head, feet and hands in his freezer, according to a police affidavit.
Michael Plumadore, 39, shuffled into court today, manacled at this feet and hands. He was ordered held without bail, police said. He was escorted by two Allen County police officers. There were additional officers in the courtroom for extra security.

He was jailed in the death of Aliahna Lemmon, 9, who disappeared from a Fort Wayne trailer park where she lived last week.

A police affidavit submitted to the court today stated that Plumadore "freely admitted" that in the "early morning hours" last Thursday, he struck Aliahna in the head multiple times with a brick "while she was standing on the front steps of his residence."

Police Affidavit Contains Michael Plumadore' Confession
PHOTO: Mike Plumadore is seen in this undated Allen County (Ind.) Sheriff's Department file photo.
He put the girl's body in several trash bags and stuffed her in a freezer until nighttime came. He worked past midnight dismembering Aliahna's body with a hack saw, the affidavit, obtained by ABC News, states. He put the pieces in garbage gas and tossed them in a Dumpster of a nearby business, but kept her head, hands and feet in his freezer.

Plumadore did not tell police why he killed the young girl.

Plumadore, who had been babysitting Aliahna and her two sisters for a week because their mother was ill, initially told police that he has last seen Aliahna sleeping in his trailer on Friday but didn't alert police to her disappearance until Friday night because he believed she had gone home to her mother.
Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries said the girl's body was found after 9 p.m. Monday night.

According to the girl's relatives, Plumadore had been taking care of and living with Aliahna's grandfather, James E. Lemmon, until he died on Dec. 3, 2011, the AP reported. Plumadore was living in the grandfather's trailer at the time of Aliahna's death.

"[Plumadore] was a trusted family friend," Aliahna's stepgrandfather, David Story, told the AP.
James Lemmon was 66 when he died, and had an extensive criminal record, including convictions for child molestation in 2006 and was a registered sex offender.

Aliahna Lemmon
Plumadore was arrested after his third interview with police, Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel told ABCNews.com.
Fries said Plumadore has a criminal record in North Carolina and Florida. Plumadore's next hearing is scheduled for Dec. 30.

The tragic discovery came the same day that police announced that the FBI had joined the investigation and candlelight vigil was being held for Aliahna in Fort Wayne.

A page had been set up on Facebook for the missing girl called "Find Aliahna Marie Maroney Lemmon Missing from Fort Wayne, Indiana." On Sunday, the group posted, "Merry Christmas Aliahna where ever you are! We won't give up on you!"

"No kid should be missing Christmas!" the post read.

Man says he drove 225 miles with dead wife

Authorities say a British Columbia man drove about 225 miles after his 75-year-old wife died in the car next to him, uncertain whether he could cross the Canadian border with her.

Tonasket Police Chief Robert Burks says the 71-year-old man didn't know what to do, so he kept driving. The man was vacationing in Oregon when his wife began suffering a medical condition. They were trying to get home to Oliver, B.C., but she died near Pasco, Wash.

The Wenatchee World reports the man on Sunday called the vehicle emergency system, OnStar, which put him in touch with dispatchers in Okanogan County. A dispatcher convinced him to stop at the Tonasket police station, about 20 miles south of Canada.

Burks says the woman was taken to North Valley Hospital and pronounced dead. He says police determined her death wasn't suspicious.

Utah Woman Accused Of Assaulting Ice Cream Truck Driver's Face Because Prices Were Too High

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah -- A Utah woman faces misdemeanor charges after police say she sprayed an ice cream truck driver in the face with cleaning solution because she was upset about the driver's prices.

Authorities in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville say 65-year-old Andrea Chavez told them she sprayed the woman because "she charges too much for ice cream."

The incident happened Aug. 7 at an apartment complex. Charges were filed Monday, though the reason for the delay was unknown. A message left for Salt Lake County prosecutors was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Police say the driver was briefly hospitalized after being hit in the eyes with Mean Green cleaner, a product described on its website as a blend of nontoxic, biodegradable detergents.

Court papers say Chavez fought off Taylorsville police officer Mike Ikemiyashiro when he tried to take her into custody, threatening to "sock him in the face" and kick him in the groin.

Salt Lake County sheriff's office records show Chavez was booked into jail after the incident and held for three days. She was released when no charges were filed. By law, authorities can hold someone in jail for only 72 hours without filing charges.

On Monday prosecutors charged Chavez with four misdemeanors: assault against a police officer, assault, interfering with an officer and committing a violent offense in front of a child. If convicted, she faces a combined punishment of two and half years in the county jail.

An arraignment is set for Jan. 4 in Salt Lake City's 3rd District Court.

It wasn't immediately clear Tuesday if Chavez had an attorney. A telephone message left at a listing under her name wasn't returned.

Officials step up efforts to find missing toddler

WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) — As the FBI stepped up its efforts to find a 20-month-old girl who disappeared from her father's home over the weekend, investigators combed through trash bins, drained a stream and pored over more than 100 leads offered by the public.

Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey refused to speculate Tuesday on whether Ayla Reynolds was alive, saying authorities are focused on finding her. The investigation remains a missing-person case, he said.
Meanwhile, in his first public statement, the girl's father, Justin DiPietro, said he doesn't know what happened to her.

"I have no idea what happened to Ayla, or who is responsible," he said.
"I will not make accusations or insinuations towards anyone until the police have been able to prove who's responsible for this."

The Portland Press Herald reported that DiPietro released the statement through the Waterville Police Department, saying his family and friends will do "everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home."

Massey said the FBI launched a door-to-door canvass of neighbors to glean any information that may lead them to the little girl.

"We've ruled out nothing," said Massey, whose central Maine agency has combined efforts with firefighters, state police, game wardens and the FBI.

Ayla was last seen when DiPietro, put her to bed Friday night. He called police to report her missing the following morning, saying he found her bed empty.

"I have shared every piece of information possible with the police," DiPietro said in his statement.
On Tuesday, a state police evidence vehicle remained outside the home that DiPietro shared with his mother in Waterville.

State police stationed outside the house told reporters that the DiPietros were not there. Their whereabouts were unknown to the public, and The Associated Press could not find phone numbers for them.
While the neighborhood was canvassed, police were checking out trash bins across the city. A stretch of Messalonskee Stream a few blocks from DiPietro home was drained nearly dry so wardens could get a better look, both from the ground and from an airplane overhead, officials said.

Massey said each of the 100 leads that have been given to police was being followed.
Ayla's mother said she's trying to remain optimistic that her daughter is OK. Trista Reynolds said she's trying to keep it together for an 8-month-old son who remains in her care but acknowledges the past few days have been tough.

"Sometimes I think that she's OK. Sometimes I start thinking that the worst can happen. That's how I've been feeling. I lay my head down at night and wonder where she is. Am I going to see her again? Do I get to see her beautiful smile?" Reynolds said of her daughter Ayla. "She's my little girl."

Police said both of Ayla's parents, who live separately, continued to cooperate with police.
"Ayla Reynolds is etched in all our minds and reminds every investigator why it's important to stay focused and committed to the task at hand: to bring Ayla back home," Massey said.

The Reynolds family was advised after meeting with Waterville police to return to their homes 75 miles to the south in Portland to let police conduct their investigation. Reynolds and her older sister, Jessica, were staying in a hotel Tuesday to keep away from the media frenzy.

"I'm watching my sister fall to pieces," Jessica Reynolds said. "I don't think she has any tears left to cry."
Trista Reynolds told The Associated Press that she and DiPietro never lived together as a couple. But Reynolds said a drinking problem prompted her to enter rehabilitation in Lewiston for 10 days in October; she said that although her mother and older sister cared for Ayla during that time, child welfare agents intervened to place the girl with DiPietro.

Last week, Reynolds filed court papers that she hoped would lead to the return of her daughter. The filing occurred the day before Ayla was last seen in Waterville.

DiPietro said Tuesday that although he has sole custody of his daughter, "It has always been my intention to have a shared parenting arrangement with Ayla's mother and I will continue to work towards that when Ayla is returned to us."

Associated Press writer David Sharp in Portland contributed to this report.

Facebook Image of Girl Bound With Duct Tape Leads to Joint Investigation in Chicago

A disturbing image purportedly showing a young girl bound with duct tape on her mouth, wrists and ankles has touched off a joint police and child protective services investigation in Chicago, FoxNews.com has learned.

The image, which was circulated on the Web, appears to be posted on a Facebook profile page bearing the name Andre Dmcg Curry and describes him as a 21-year-old married Chicago man.

A caption accompanying the image reads: "This is wut [sic] happens wen [sic] my baby hits me back. ; )"

When FoxNews.com, however, accessed a Facebook proflle on Tuesday apparently belonging to Curry, the image was not visible. Several attempts by FoxNews.com to contact Curry and other members of his family for comment were unsuccessful.

Officer Mike Sullivan, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department, confirmed to FoxNews.com that the image has led to an "ongoing investigation."

Detectives have questioned Curry, who has not been placed under arrest as of midday Tuesday, Sullivan said, declining further comment.

Jimmie Whitelow, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, said his agency also is investigating the image. Whitelow said DCFS officials have had no prior contact with the family.

Curry's purported Facebook profile contains several messages from Saturday referencing the image.

"Nasty dirty child abuser," one posting read. "To do this to your daughter, your flesh and blood is unbelievable."

Another posting read: "This is what happens when children have children. I won't leave a negative comment because hate breeds more hate. This boy needs prayer, education, parenting classes, and therapy."

Swallowed pen still works 25 years later

Swallowed pen still works 25 years later

The pen is said to be mightier than the sword. But an unusual case report has shown that a pen may be mightier than stomach acid.

The case, which appeared in the British Medical Journal Case Reports, described a 76- year-old British woman sent to a GI specialist because of weight loss and diarrhea.

She was diagnosed with severe diverticulosis, a condition that's common in older people in which small pouches bulge out from the colon. But when doctors did a scanning test of her belly they noticed something strange: "A linear foreign body in the stomach."

When asked about it, the woman remembered accidentally swallowing a black felt-tip pen 25 years earlier. (In case you're wondering, dentures and toothpicks are two of the most common items that adults accidentally swallow.)

According to her gastroenterologist Dr. Oliver Waters, who authored the case report, she was standing on her stairs using an uncapped pen to poke a spot on her tonsils. She was also holding a hand mirror to guide the pen to the exact spot. Somehow, while doing this, she lost her balance and stumbled. The fall managed to push the pen down her throat. It glided down her gullet and found a home in her tummy.

She told her husband and her doctor what had happened, but they were skeptical of the story. X-rays done at the time were normal and found no trace of the pen. Flash forward to the present, to a different doctor and even better stomach-scanning technology to investigate the case of the missing marker. More than two decades later a scan hit pay dirt: The pen.

Although the woman's current digestive problems had nothing to do with the marker she had unintentionally downed, doctors decided to remove it anyway. Their rationale was a case in the medical literature of a child accidentally swallowing a ball-point pen that bore a hole in his bowel. Incredibly, the pen had stayed in her stomach for 25 years without causing any significant damage to her GI tract, Waters says.

After bathing in stomach acid for a two-and-a-half decades, the pen was corroded and the plastic was flaky, but, amazingly, the pen still had usable ink and could write!

"This case highlights that plain abdominal x-rays may not identify ingested plastic objects and occasionally it may be worth believing the patient's account however unlikely it may be," the report advises doctors.

New York Woman Attacked and Burned to Death in Elevator

A woman burned to death in the elevator of her Brooklyn apartment building Saturday after a man ambushed her, sprayed her with liquid and set her afire with a Molotov cocktail, police said.
The unidentified man was waiting for 64-year-old Doris Gillespie, when the elevator doors opened to her floor of the Prospect Heights building. The man sprayed her with an accelerate and set her on fire, New York City police spokesman Paul Browne said.

"It was apparent he knew she was on the elevator," he said.
No arrests had been made as of early Sunday, and police were still searching for the suspect.
The brutal attack happened shortly after 4 p.m., lasted about a minute and was recorded by two video cameras, including one inside the small elevator.

Brown said the video showed the elevator doors opening to the fifth floor where Gillespie's apartment was located and the assailant stepping in and spraying her.

Gillespie, who had grocery bags in her arms, turned about 180 degrees and then crouched in an attempted to protect herself, he said. But the man sprayed her directly in the face and continued to spray her "sort of methodically" over her head and parts of her body as the bags draped off her arms. She turned around and retreated to the back of the elevator.

At some point, Browne said, the suspect then pulled out a barbeque-style lighter, used it to ignite a rag in a bottle and then waited for a few seconds before using the flames to set her afire, causing smoke to fill the elevator.
The man backed out as she fell to the floor of the elevator, Browne said, and seemed to pause before tossing the bottle inside the elevator and onto her.

Browne would not comment on the motive in the killing, but said the suspect knew his victim.
Investigators believe the suspect fled down the stairs of the building, he said.

Police released still images of the man Saturday night, showing him in a black jacket, wearing what appear to be surgical gloves and with a white dust mask perched atop his head like a pair of sunglasses. He is holding what appears to be a canister with a nozzle and spraying as he steps into the elevator.

Neighbors reported a fire in the building, unaware that the woman was burning to death in the elevator.
Residents were evacuated from the six-story building for hours Saturday night.

'Most wanted' fugitive spotted on school field trip

'Most wanted' fugitive spotted on school field trip

SEATTLE -- The Seattle School District is investigating how a fugitive from the law ended up on a school field trip Wednesday afternoon.

A fellow parent recognized the man, Donald Vasser, from the TV show "Washington's Most Wanted," and police were called in.

Vasser fled, but turned himself in after patrol officers, SWAT and a K-9 unit spent hours searching for him. A Department of Corrections employee reached Vasser on the phone and convinced him to give up.
The drama started when 20 Lowell Elementary students and a few adults went to Cal Anderson Park for an ice-skating field trip. Vasser was one of the chaperones.

"He wanted to go to this field trip with his daughter because she was really wanting him to go," said Mary Vasser-Johnson, Vasser's mother. "He said he was going to take a chance because he didn't want to disappoint her."

While walking back to the school, one parent recognized that Vasser was wanted by police. Officers were called in, prompting a lockdown at Lowell Elementary.

According to the Washington Department of Corrections, Vasser was in prison from 2006 to February of 2011 on a drug conviction. Vasser violated probation by having wine in his fridge, and a warrant for his arrest was issued on November 28.

In a statement, the Seattle School District says it is currently investigating how the parent was allowed to participate in the field trip saying, "Each Seattle school is expected to conduct a WATCH (Washington Access to Criminal History) check on all parent volunteers. It appears that there was a miscommunication in the building today. The parent was not cleared to chaperone."

"If it's true, I'd probably be quite bothered," said Amy Tu, a parent with two kids who were in the school during the lockdown.

Emington, Illinois Shooting: 5 Dead, Including 3 Children

Note: DecaturFilms does not take credit for this story. Information can be found at huffingtonpost.

EMINGTON, Ill. — Five people, including a baby and two children, were found shot to death Friday at a home in a small eastern Illinois farming town, authorities said, and police said they were not searching for a gunman.

While not specifically saying the shooter was among the dead, Livingston County Sheriff Martin Meredith said the community was "safe from any harm" and authorities "are not looking for anyone in this crime."
County board member Bob Young, who lives in Emington, said the dead included a man, a woman, an infant, a first grader and a fourth grader. The family had moved to the town of about 100 people about 80 miles southwest of Chicago within the last six months and the two older children attend school in nearby Saunemin, Young said. The street where the family lived was closed by police, he said.
Meredith said first responders found the bodies after Livingston County dispatchers received a call Friday afternoon. Coroner Michael Burke will release the names of the victims once relatives are notified, the sheriff said.

Livingston County authorities and Illinois State Police crime scene technicians were still working the scene late Friday, Meredith said. He declined to release additional details about the shooting, saying more information would be released Saturday morning.

Ronald Groetsema lives near the home where the family was found and said he heard six to eight gunshots, then heard a second round of four to six shots a few minutes later. Groetsema's 12-year-old son got off the school bus with the children who died, he said.

"They were happy because it was the last day of school before Christmas break," Groetsema said.
Residents described Emington as a once strictly farming town that has gone through changes in the last 20 years as young families moved in. Young said the town has become more of a bedroom community from which people commute north to cities such as Joliet, about 45 miles away.

"We did have an awful disaster here," said Emington Mayor Daniel Delaney, who's been in office for 24 years. "You never would have thought it would happen in our town of 100 people or less. It's very sad. There were helicopters flying over earlier. Right now it's just very, very, very sad for us here."
Delaney said the town is not prosperous and has received help from the state. "It's always really had a hard time. Most of the people are retired or farmers who moved into town," he said.
Young said Emington has a post office that's been targeted for closure and just a handful of small businesses – a grain elevator, a dog groomer and a small beauty salon. The town, he said, had never experienced anything like Friday's shootings.

"I've lived here all my life. I guess, 60, 70 years ago we had a bank robbery, was the other big thing, but otherwise, nothing like this," he said.
Young said he did not know the family well.

"We've seen the kids playing at the playground and talk to them," Young said. "We thought everything was fine."

Suicidal Beau Confesses to Double Murder on Facebook

(Newser) – A jilted, suicidal beau confessed to double murder from his grave—on his Facebook page. "Someone call 911," wrote Bart Heller of Indiana. "I've killed Ryann, Erin, and myself. People were warned not to play me. They didn't listen. Sorry about your luck." A friend called police when she spotted Heller's note. "I was just playing on my Facebook, and through the news feed I saw he updated his status," said Heller's friend Nancy Lopez. "I freaked out, and was thinking to myself is this true or fake? I called Fort Wayne police and told them what was going on." Police found Heller, his ex-girlfriend, Erin Jehl, and her friend, Ryann Tipton, dead in Heller's apartment. They were all 19.

Investigators believe Jehl and Tipton were shot when they came to Heller's home to pick up Jehl's belongings following a breakup, reports ABC News. Officials said there was no apparent warning any violence was about to occur. “We have not received any information that he made threats to them," said an investigator.

Crime in Decatur, IL

As we move closer to the end of 2011 I would like to talk about the crime that had taken place over the past year. Lot's of people say crime is out of control and the police need to do something to make this stop. Well here is a few things I would like to talk about and then share something with all of you..

Cops need to setup and stop the crime.  Cops don't put guns into the criminals hands. Stop and think, would you like to be a police officer in Decatur, IL?  You say crime is so bad do you stop and think about what the cops have to go through? Yes some cops are better then others but that's like any city you go to.

Murders happen in-lots of bigger city's, Decatur is around 79,000 to 82,000 people so a-little smaller then Springfield but look at the murder rates in those other city's - Decatur has murders yes, Decatur also solves it's murders really fast. Only one murder is not solved from this summer, which in case a teen was shot after going home from the Decatur Cel. - More then 100,000 people come to the event each day so it maybe a-little harder to find out who may have done this, but Decatur will not back down they will keep going strong.

Decatur has had a bad name for more then 100 years, nothing has changed since this little dark city has started in the 1820's. Why say it's getting worse. Below is a little story from my good friend and author Troy Taylor. Here is a-little on the start of Decatur, IL..

-Haunted Decatur-  Troy Taylor*

In 1854, Colonel Dan Conklin started a whiskey distillery, racetrack and a whorehouse on the outskirts of Decatur and the city earned the first of its unflattering nicknames -- "Hell's Half Acre". It would go on to earn others, including the "Second Most Corrupt City in Illinois" in the 1920s, and would gain infamy as a place where murder, bootlegging, prostitution, kidnapping, gambling, corruption in city government and, of course, ghosts were commonplace. But Decatur's dark origins can be traced back to the earliest days of the city, when the original settlers built over the top of Native American burial grounds that were scattered throughout the downtown area of what would become Decatur. The destruction of these burial mounds cast a mysterious pall over the city -- a darkness that continues to linger today.

Calif. family of 4 dead in apparent murder-suicide

Please note DecaturFilms does not take credit for this story.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A family of four that included a 9-year-old girl and a high school senior was found dead Tuesday in a swimming pool and bathtub at their San Diego home, in what police are calling an apparent triple murder-suicide.

The discovery stunned friends and neighbors in the quiet cul-de-sac, who described the four as a hard-working couple, a teenage daughter who was excited for prom and a younger girl who made friends easily.

San Diego police Lt. Ernie Herbert said the suspect was one of the four family members, but he declined to say which one. He said investigators found evidence of a murder-suicide after combing the home, but they were still working to determine a motive and were unsure exactly how the victims died.
Maurice Luque, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, said earlier that all four appeared to have drowned.

Police identified the victims as Alfredo Pimienta, 44; his wife, Georgina Pimienta, 38; Priscilla Pimienta, 17; and Emily Pimienta, 9.

A relative reported finding the bodies after Alfredo Pimienta called to ask that he visit the home in a quiet southeast San Diego neighborhood, police said. The relative came to discuss a business transaction shortly after dawn.
Police responded to find Alfredo Pimienta and two females — one apparently the younger daughter — in the pool and another female in the bathtub. It wasn't immediately clear if the female in the bathtub was the older daughter or the mother.

Neighbors and friends said nothing seemed amiss with the couple, known for logging long hours at work, or their two girls. Georgina Pimienta's stepfather, Jose Villa, said he and his wife picked up Emily from school Monday. He said the family owns a towing business.
Priscilla Pimienta was preparing for college. She was to graduate next month from San Diego's High Tech High School, a charter school that has earned national acclaim for its high graduation rate, said classmate Alex Jasmund.

Jasmund said he, Priscilla and two other friends went to a theater Monday afternoon to see the 3-D vampire-hunting movie "Priest," a graphic-novel adaptation. Priscilla met with friends for frozen yogurt after the film to plan for Saturday's prom, including details like ordering a limousine and having a party with about 20 classmates.
Jasmund said everything seemed normal when he saw Priscilla, her parents and her younger sister at a pool party at the home Saturday for Priscilla's friends.

"How can this happen to anyone? Why would this happen to anyone? They don't deserve this. No one does," Jasmund said as he stood with his father outside the ranch-style house with Christmas lights on the garage door.

Marlon Soriano, who lives two doors away, said the family had been renting the home for no longer than two years. They hosted pool parties for relatives in the summer.
"They were a really close family," he said.

The house is one of the few rental properties in the safe, family-oriented neighborhood, said Soriano, 22, who has lived in the area since he was born. New tenants arrived at the home every two or three years.
"We're all pretty close-knit," Soriano said. "We all know each other."

Soriano waved hello to the family but generally didn't talk to them. The younger girl often played with other children in the neighborhood.

"The children were happy," he said. "They always seemed to be smiling."
Soriano said police knocked on his door at 7 a.m. to tell him about the crime scene. Police said the relative called to report the bodies at around 6:40 a.m.
