DECATUR - An 18-year-old man was shot after he was confronted by two men in front of his house Tuesday night.

The victim, who lives in the 800 block of West Olive Street, was being treated for injuries not considered life threatening at Decatur Memorial Hospital on Wednesday.

Decatur police officers were sent to the vicinity of Huron and Center streets at 8:10 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired, police Sgt. Steve Chabak said. As officers headed to the scene, they learned there was a shooting victim on Olive, a couple of blocks away.

Police interviewed the victim, who was taken to the hospital by ambulance, suffering from wounds to his right forearm, his right torso and back.

It was not known whether one or more rounds caused the wounds. The bullet that entered and exited the victim's forearm may have also entered his side and exited at the small of his back.

The victim told police he was standing outside when he saw two unknown men walking west toward him. They walked up to him, and one said, "What are you looking at?"

After an exchange of words, one man pulled out a gun and fired a shot at him. The victim said he then ran inside his house and told his father what had happened.

"He claimed he didn't know who they were and why they wanted to shoot him," Chabak said.

A neighbor, who witnessed part of the incident, described the men as both wearing black coats, with half-dollar-size gray patches all over them. The gunman was about 6 feet tall, the other man about 5 feet 9.

"He saw the argument, saw the taller man pull out a gun," Chabak said. "He saw the one man fire a shot, (the victim) run into his house."

The neighbor said he went into his house after the first shot, then thought he heard two more shots.

The gunman and his companion fled on foot, according to a police report.
